A system can be elegant and still be fragile. Efficiency is beautiful when the world behaves. Resilience is beautiful when it doesn’t.
This tension isn’t about being “good” at efficiency or “good” at resilience. It’s about what you erase when you optimise. Minimal waste removes more than cost. It removes slack. And slack is what turns surprise into solvable problems.
What Efficiency Actually Removes
Efficiency optimises the ratio: inputs to outputs. That usually means:
- fewer idle states,
- tighter throughput,
- less space between steps,
- smaller inventories (physical and procedural),
- fewer fallback paths.
Those choices are not neutral. They change how a system responds to:
- delays,
- variability,
- partial failures,
- demand spikes,
- human unpredictability,
- information gaps.
Resilience—practical resilience—is the capacity to absorb shock without cascading into collapse. And shock absorption requires something efficiency tends to remove: buffers.
Buffer vs Redundancy: Same Comfort, Different Shape
People often lump buffers and redundancy together. But they behave differently.
Buffers
Buffers slow the consequences of disruption.
- Inventory buffers (extra parts, extra stock)
- Time buffers (schedules with slack)
- Capacity buffers (underloaded machines/teams)
- Queue buffers (handoffs that don’t block everything immediately)
Buffers buy time and reduce cascade speed.
Redundancy
Redundancy preserves capability when something fails.
- Backup systems
- Multiple suppliers
- Cross-training
- Alternative process paths
Redundancy buys survival of function.
