The gate is legible
Pen & Muse is curated, and we say so plainly. Your work is read by a person, judged on its craft, and answered. A gate only means something if it is honest about being one.
For Writers
Pen & Muse is a press. We publish a small number of works we believe in, and we make some of them enterable — living editions a reader can step inside, where no two readings are the same. Submitting here means asking an editor to read you, and being answered properly.
What This Page Is
This is the front door of the editorial relationship: what the press is, how the gate works, and what we promise the writers we publish.
Behind it sits Pen & Muse Studio — the environment our works are made in. You don't need it to submit; work written anywhere is welcome through the same gate.
The Film · 60 Seconds
Books do not arrive finished. A minute on the moment every manuscript reaches — and why the press was built for it.
Pen & Muse is curated, and we say so plainly. Your work is read by a person, judged on its craft, and answered. A gate only means something if it is honest about being one.
A living edition performs your work; it never rewrites it. Your prose stays untouched, and nothing joins your book — or goes live at all — without your explicit approval.
This is not self-publishing and not an open upload flow. We publish a small number of works we believe in, because the imprint’s name is the promise we make to readers.
Author Presence
These are examples of the kind of author presence Pen & Muse is building around: not just products, but a coherent authored catalogue.

Studio Author
An independent press and literary studio publishing carefully made books, living editions, and dispatches for readers who value depth, craft, and ideas worth keeping.
“Some works deserve to be read. Some deserve to be entered.”

Studio Author
A public author profile within the Pen & Muse catalogue.

Partnered Author
Skyler Holloway writes tales where lost time ticks in forgotten corners, dreams bleed into reality, and magic comes wrapped in riddles. With prose that dances between the whimsical and the unsettling, Holloway’s stories blur the line between myth and memory. Readers say his books feel like opening a door you didn’t know was there—and realizing it’s been waiting for you all along.
“Wishes are just lies wrapped in longing.”
The Manual
The Pen & Muse Manual is the permanent, public record of the Studio's tools and workflows. Each guide shows a real task, the visible result, and the supporting material needed to repeat it.

The Studio
The Studio is the press's own writing environment — the room where the house catalogue is drafted, edited, and prepared for publication, including the living editions readers can enter.
Work written in the Studio arrives at the gate already carrying its structure, which makes the path from manuscript to published edition unusually short. Work written anywhere else is judged by exactly the same editorial standard — the gate is one gate.
On money: we are building the economics of this press around a simple conviction — the author's share should be the generous one. We won't publish numbers until they are settled and true; selected authors see the full terms, in writing, before anything is signed.
