The Reusable Insight
An explanation isn’t “reusable” because it sounds good.
It’s reusable because it changes how the person thinks on a later day—when the original problem is gone and the new one arrives wearing a different costume.
The hidden job of a great explanation
Most explanations answer: “What is happening?”
The best ones answer: “How do I recognize and handle this class of situation?”
That second answer turns your explanation into a mental lever. The reader learns not just a story, but a move.
And once you’ve taught a move, you’ve given them something they can pull in other rooms.
Why some explanations travel and others don’t
Some explanations stay stuck to the original context. They’re well-written, even correct—yet they fail the transfer test.
They fail because they deliver:
- Too much surface
- Too little mechanism
- No decision rule
- No “if this, then that” guidance
- No reusable framing for uncertainty
Meanwhile, carryable explanations have a particular shape. They feel “portable” because they include the instructions your brain needs to run them again.
The three ingredients of a carryable explanation
Here’s the architecture you’re aiming for—because “reusable” is not a vibe. It’s a structure.
1) A core recognition cue
The reader must know what to notice first when the situation looks unfamiliar.
This is often the missing step: your explanation names the phenomenon, but the reader needs a signal that tells them they’ve found the phenomenon again.
