Space Is Not Empty
In everyday life, “space” means absence.
But physics doesn’t treat absence like a void. It treats it like a field—something with structure, something with energy, something that can do work even when there’s “nothing there” in the ordinary sense.
The vacuum isn’t blank
Consider the vacuum as the default background of reality.
Quantum field theory gives it a stubborn property: even in the lowest-energy state, fields aren’t silent. They jitter. Constantly. The technical phrase is vacuum fluctuations—brief, probabilistic variations in the underlying fields.
You don’t “see” this jitter directly with your eyes. That’s the point. Your senses are tuned for macroscopic regularities, not microscopic agitation.
Yet these fluctuations have consequences.
Energy is everywhere—just not everywhere obvious
So what does it mean that fields exist everywhere?
It means that space is not a container. It’s the medium.
A field assigns a value to every point in space. Sometimes that value is calm. Often it isn’t. But the field isn’t optional—space doesn’t come with a “no fields” setting.
And when energy lives in the fabric, “emptiness” becomes conditional. The question stops being “Is there anything?” and becomes “What form is it taking, and how will it show up under the conditions we can measure?”
You’re only looking at a sliver
Even when something is present, you might not be able to register it.
Take the electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light is a narrow band of frequencies your eyes evolved to detect. Beyond that band are forms of electromagnetic radiation you can’t see directly: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays.
