The story we tell (and where it breaks)
There’s a comforting assumption most people carry without ever stating it:
Reality is already decided. We just go and look at it.
Objects sit there, fully formed, with properties waiting to be revealed. Measurement is a passive act—like opening a box to see what was already inside.
That story works almost everywhere.
Until it doesn’t.
At small scales, experiments don’t behave like that story is true. They behave as if the act of measurement is not just revealing outcomes—but participating in which outcomes are even possible.
The double-slit clue
The setup is almost too simple:
A source emits particles.
A barrier has two narrow slits.
A screen sits behind to record where particles land.
If particles were just tiny objects, you would expect two clusters—one behind each slit.
But when no attempt is made to determine which slit a particle passes through, the result is something else entirely:
An interference pattern—bands of high and low intensity that only make sense if each particle behaves like a wave, spreading through both slits and interacting with itself.
Now change one thing.
Introduce a way—any reliable way—to determine which slit the particle goes through.
The interference disappears.
The pattern becomes two clean bands, as if the particle chose one path.
