The cleanest way to make progress is to stop asking “what should I do?” and start asking “what is fundamentally true?”

Most decisions are made inside a fog of inherited assumptions: conventions, analogies, best practices, and the loudest voices in the room. First-principles thinking cuts through that fog. It’s not a vibe. It’s a method for rebuilding your understanding from the ground up—using only what you can justify.

What “first principles” actually are

A first principle isn’t “a basic fact” like gravity. It’s more precise than that: it’s a statement you can’t improve by arguing better—it’s the lowest layer of your reasoning that the rest of the model depends on.

When you truly operate at first principles, you can’t hide behind analogy. If the principle is wrong, your conclusion will eventually break—no matter how polished it sounds.

The difference between first principles and “common sense”

Common sense is usually an index of what worked in the past. First principles is an index of what must work regardless of history.

  • Common sense: “People like X, so do X.”
  • First principles: “People are constrained by incentives, attention, and trust; therefore X is effective only if it serves those constraints.”

First principles don’t remove intuition. They discipline it.

The method: from constraints to construction

This is the practical loop: strip down → rebuild → test. Most people only do the rebuilding and skip the stripping.

Define the outcome you want (in plain, measurable terms).

List every assumption you’re currently using (including the “obvious” ones).

Translate each assumption into either:

- a first principle (must be true), or

- a variable (may change).

Rebuild the solution from the principles, not from the existing approach.

Run a small test or contradiction check against the rebuilt model.

A quick demonstration: “better strategy” isn’t a principle

Suppose someone says, “We need a better strategy.”

That’s not a first principle. It’s a placeholder for discomfort.

So we do the stripping.

What are the real underlying questions?

  • How do we create value people are willing to trade for?
  • What prevents adoption?
  • What constraints (time, attention, distribution, cost) make some approaches impossible?

First principles will force answers that are structural, not rhetorical.

The “assumption audit” that turns thinking into traction

Here’s a simple structure to expose the scaffolding under your current plan.

You’ll notice something: the first-principles move isn’t “more thinking.” It’s cleaner inputs. The output becomes more reliable because it’s anchored to fewer, stronger claims.

Where first principles are most valuable

First-principles thinking shines when:

  • the situation is new enough that old playbooks fail,
  • incentives are unclear or shifting,
  • the cost of being wrong is high,
  • the current approach feels “obviously right” but hasn’t produced results.

It’s less useful when the problem is purely operational and the constraints are already known. Then “do the thing” beats “re-derive the thing.”

First principles in creative work (not just business)

Writers and builders often use first principles without naming them.

  • A fiction writer starts from: what feelings do I want to cause, and what narrative mechanics reliably produce them?
  • A designer starts from: what must the user understand, and which interactions translate understanding into action?
  • An educator starts from: what can a learner actually do with their current mental model?

In creative work, first principles protect you from aesthetic drift. You stop decorating a weak foundation.

The trap: confusing “rebuilding” with “endless skepticism”

First-principles thinking can become a paralysis machine if you treat doubt as a personality trait.

The goal isn’t to mistrust everything. The goal is to earn your beliefs by reducing them to the smallest set of claims that actually matter.

You rebuild until you can act, not until you can never be wrong.

Tabs: how to apply it depending on what you’re stuck on

Start with: “What outcome am I optimizing for?”
Then list assumptions about users, constraints, and tradeoffs.
Rebuild options from constraints; choose the one that best survives a fast test.

Creativity
Start with: “What transformation am I trying to cause in the reader/user?”
Then derive mechanics from human cognition and emotion—not from genre clichés.
Ship a draft that makes the mechanics visible.

Debates
Start with: “Which claims are actually first-order and which are framing?”
Translate contested words into underlying assumptions.
Only debate first principles; treat everything else as variable until tested.

You don’t need to master this theory. You need to run it once—cleanly—so your brain learns the feel of it.
