The real point of explanation

Most “explaining” is just reporting with nicer pacing.

It moves information from your head to someone else’s screen.
But it doesn’t necessarily reorganise the other person’s internal model of how things work.

In this part of the series, we’re going after that exact shift: the moment an explanation stops being a transcript and starts being a reconfiguration.

Description: the ledger of events

Description is information density without structural advantage.

It answers questions like:

  • What’s true here?
  • What are the parts?
  • What did the system do?

Descriptions can be accurate and still fail.

Because they don’t tell the reader what to do with the information. They don’t connect facts to a mental mechanism, so the reader stores them as notes—rather than as understanding.

A common symptom: your audience nods while staying stuck. They agree with your statements, but nothing inside them reorganises.

Illumination: the map behind the terrain

Illumination is explanatory structure.

It makes the underlying relations legible:

  • what drives what
  • what constrains what
  • what changes when conditions change
  • why the pattern emerges

An illuminating explanation doesn’t just tell the reader “this is the case.”
It helps them see the pattern as inevitable—or at least as derivable.

What illumination does inside the mind

When illumination lands, the reader can do three things more easily:

  1. Predict what will happen next (at least approximately).
  2. Diagnose what’s causing what.
  3. Transfer the idea to a new but related context.

Descriptions rarely produce all three. They may produce one—often recall—but not the usable model.
