For more than a century, modern life has encouraged us to treat the human being as a social machine: predictable, measurable, optimisable.
We work in units. We track inputs and outputs. We speak of energy as though it were a battery, health as though it were a dashboard, and attention as though it were a resource to be extracted.
Something vital gets lost in the translation.
In a long conversation on The Joe Rogan Experience, physician Zach Bush offered a provocative diagnosis of this condition. His claim was not simply that modern life is stressful. It is that abstraction has severed us from the biological intelligence in which we are immersed.
He called the present moment a kind of hospice moment: a period in which old systems are failing, and our task is not merely to preserve them, but to learn what they were preventing us from seeing.
Some of Bush’s scientific claims are speculative, and several sit outside established medical consensus. They should be treated as hypotheses, metaphors, or invitations to investigate—not as clinical guidance.
But beneath the more extravagant claims is a serious question:
What happens when we stop treating ourselves as isolated machines and begin to understand ourselves as living participants in a wider field?
1. Your Coffee Is a Relationship, Not a Chemical
We often ask whether something is good or bad for us.
Is coffee healthy? Is sugar toxic? Is exercise beneficial? Is technology harmful?
These questions are attractive because they promise simple answers. But biological life rarely behaves like a simple list of inputs and outputs.
Coffee consumed to conceal exhaustion is not the same experience as coffee enjoyed as part of a rested, attentive morning. The substance may be identical. The relationship is not.
This does not mean context makes every substance safe. Nor does it turn caffeine into a form of spiritual medicine. It means that the body is not a passive container into which we pour chemicals. It is a responsive system interpreting signals.
A stimulant can help us concentrate. It can also help us ignore what concentration is costing us.
The more interesting question is not simply:
Is this good for me?
It is:
What role is this playing in the life I am actually living?
2. The Hospice Moment
Bush’s most compelling insights come from his experience with dying patients.
At the end of life, people rarely speak about inboxes, quarterly targets, or the status games that once seemed urgent. They speak about love. Regret. Beauty. Estrangement. The moments in which they were most fully present.
This is not an argument that work is meaningless. It is an argument that work is often overrepresented in our hierarchy of importance.
The hospice perspective does not ask us to surrender ambition. It asks us to distinguish between what occupies our attention and what deserves it.
The difference matters.
An intensive-care mentality treats decline as an enemy to be defeated at any cost. A hospice mentality asks what the decline is revealing, what can still be integrated, and what kind of care is appropriate now.
That distinction applies beyond illness. Institutions, identities, careers, relationships, and cultures also reach moments when preservation is no longer the same as health.
The paradox of surrender
Bush describes patients who appear to recover after releasing their resistance to death. Some hospice patients are eventually discharged because their condition stabilises or improves.
That phenomenon should not be romanticised. Recovery is complex, and hospice outcomes cannot be reduced to a single psychological mechanism.
Still, the broader insight remains useful:
Resistance is not always the same as strength.
Sometimes the body begins repairing itself when we stop demanding that it maintain an impossible version of normality.
The hospice perspective can reveal what ordinary life teaches us to overlook.
Death strips away the incentives, performances, and abstractions that organise daily attention.

- —Acceptance can create room for care, reconciliation, and more accurate decision-making.
We should practise asking, before the crisis arrives, what our current way of living is training us to value.
3. From Objects to Processes
One of Bush’s recurring themes is that modern language turns living processes into static objects.
A tree becomes a tree: an object to classify, own, measure, or remove.
A more relational language might emphasise treeing: growth, exchange, shade, decay, habitat, and time.
The distinction is subtle but consequential. Nouns encourage us to see the world as a collection of things. Verbs remind us that everything is happening.
This is one reason the word “nature” is so revealing. In ordinary usage, nature often means the physical world apart from human beings. The definition quietly places us outside the system we depend on.
We become observers of nature rather than one of its expressions.
That separation is useful for analysis. It is disastrous when mistaken for reality.
Bush’s communication ladder
Bush presents a historical movement from embodied, participatory communication toward increasingly abstract representation.
The details of this model are open to debate. But as a metaphor for alienation, it is powerful.

Telepathy, tonal language, hieroglyphs, and digital symbols should not be placed on a single scientific continuum without evidence. Yet the underlying concern is recognisable: every representation can create distance between experience and the thing represented.
A photograph is not a landscape. A health metric is not health. An emoji is not grief.
The symbol may communicate something. It may also conceal what cannot be measured.

A useful model begins to feel more real than the living system it describes.
4. The Body as Antenna
The “biological antenna” is best understood as a philosophical image rather than an established scientific description.
It points toward a view of the body as perceptive, adaptive, and deeply entangled with its surroundings. We are not sealed containers. We are continuously exchanging matter, information, microbes, heat, language, attention, and emotion with the world.
The nervous system reads context. The immune system records encounters. The body adjusts to light, temperature, food, movement, social safety, and threat.
This is not mysticism. It is biology.
The danger comes when the metaphor is inflated into claims that evidence cannot support—for example, that ancient monuments transmitted medical information through geometry, or that symbols alone can reliably reverse inflammation.
Such ideas may be imaginative. They should not be confused with validated treatment.
The stronger lesson is simpler:
The body is not merely the place where experience happens. It is one of the instruments through which experience becomes intelligible.
5. The “Junk DNA” Story
The human genome contains roughly 19,000 protein-coding genes, a number that challenged the assumption that complexity depends on having vastly more genes than other organisms.
The old phrase “junk DNA” has also become less defensible. Much of the genome once considered useless appears to have regulatory, structural, or evolutionary functions. But this does not mean that the entire non-coding genome is a hidden library containing a complete record of every species.
That claim is poetic, not established genomic science.
Still, the larger correction is important. Human uniqueness does not reside in a neat inventory of uniquely human parts. It emerges from regulation, interaction, development, environment, and an evolutionary history shared with every other form of life.
We are not separate from the living world.
We are a particular arrangement of it.
6. When Nature Is Replaced by Design
Bush connects modern illness to the increasing distance between natural systems and industrial inputs.
There is a valid concern here. Highly processed foods, environmental pollutants, sedentary lifestyles, chronic stress, and disrupted sleep can affect metabolic health. Industrial systems often optimise for scale and convenience rather than biological fit.
But the mechanisms matter.
High-fructose corn syrup is not a “flipped” mirror-image version of natural fructose. The claim that it is a racemic molecule unrecognisable to the liver is chemically inaccurate. Its risks are better understood through dose, dietary pattern, metabolism, and the broader food environment.
Likewise, complex trends in obesity, diabetes, cancer, infertility, autoimmune disease, and gender development cannot be compressed into a single narrative of lost “mitochondrial light.”
A metaphor can illuminate. It can also become a false explanation.
The responsible question is not whether modernity is bad and nature is good. It is:
Which forms of design cooperate with biological reality, and which ones override it?
A more defensible collapse cascade
Rather than treating the following as a proven sequence, we can read it as a cultural pattern:
Convenience expands; movement and food environments change
Metabolic disease becomes increasingly visible
Chronic illness is managed at scale, often without addressing root conditions
Autoimmune, mental-health, and inflammatory conditions receive wider attention
Trust in institutions, expertise, and health systems becomes increasingly fragile
The temptation is to find one culprit. Biology rarely offers that satisfaction.
Illness is usually a convergence: genes, exposures, habits, stress, inequality, environment, chance, and time.
7. Autism and the Ethics of Reframing
Bush’s reframe of autism is emotionally appealing. He describes autistic children as unfiltered antennas—people who remain unusually open to the pressures and signals of their environment.
There is value in challenging deficit-only accounts of autism. Autistic people have often been forced to interpret difference as failure, while institutions have treated conformity as health.
But autism should not be explained as a spiritual upgrade, a field effect caused by caregivers, or a failure to tolerate an “antibiotic world.” These claims can create guilt, obscure support needs, and displace the voices of autistic people themselves.
A better reframe is both more modest and more humane:
Autistic people have varied sensory, cognitive, and communication profiles. Some experience heightened sensitivity. Some thrive in highly structured environments. Some need extensive support. Some need little. None of this makes autism a defect to erase or a superpower to romanticise.
The ethical task is not to decide whether autism is a deficit or an evolution.
It is to build a world in which difference is not automatically punished.
The Biological Renaissance
The most durable idea in Bush’s worldview is not the claim that the pyramids were built by thought, or that hieroglyphs can reverse disease, or that the genome contains a literal archive of every species.
It is the insistence that human beings are not machines operating outside nature.
We are organisms.
We change through relationship. We adapt through context. We carry the history of life within us—not as a mystical database, but as an evolutionary inheritance expressed through astonishingly complex systems.
The future does not require us to reject technology. It requires us to stop confusing technology with transcendence.
A chip may extend memory. A platform may widen communication. A drug may save a life.
None of these makes the body obsolete.
Treat the body as a machine. Add inputs. Remove symptoms. Override fatigue. Measure performance.
Treat the body as a living system. Study context. Notice signals. Support repair. Design for relationship.
The biological renaissance is not a return to some imagined pre-industrial purity.
It is a recovery of proportion.
We can use abstraction without being consumed by it. We can measure without reducing. We can build systems that remember the organisms they are meant to serve.
How Would You Live Differently?
The question is not whether you believe in antennas, cosmic waveforms, or hidden genomic libraries.
The question is whether your daily life gives you any chance to hear what your body already knows.
Does your work require you to override exhaustion every day?
Do your tools help you encounter the world, or replace it?
Are you consuming health information while ignoring hunger, sleep, movement, grief, and connection?
Are you treating your current identity as something to defend, even when it has become too small for your life?
If you stopped treating yourself as a machine that requires constant inputs, what would you change tomorrow?
Begin with one ordinary decision: how you wake, eat, work, move, rest, or relate to another person.
The body may not be an antenna for the infinite in the literal sense.
But it is certainly an instrument of participation.
And participation is what abstraction makes us forget.
