When ideas feel hard to consume, it’s rarely because the idea is “too complex.” It’s because your reader’s brain is forced to do too many things at once: hold details, infer missing steps, and constantly re-orient.

Cognitive Load Engineering (what it really means)
Cognitive load engineering is the practice of structuring information so working memory isn’t overloaded.
Your reader’s mental bandwidth is finite. When you exceed it, you get:
- confusion that feels like “not getting it”
- rereading
- dropping off
- vague understanding that can’t be used
The three loads you’re juggling
Think in layers. Not as trivia, but as a checklist for what’s breaking the experience.
1) Intrinsic load: the inherent complexity
Some ideas are genuinely hard. You can’t remove the physics of the problem.
2) Extraneous load: load caused by your presentation
This is the part you can fix immediately:
- unexpected jumps
- missing definitions
- crowded layouts
- non-sequiturs
- “surprise” metaphors that require extra decoding
3) Germane load: load that creates understanding
This is the productive effort you want:
- pattern recognition
- meaningful integration
- deliberate mental rehearsal
A framework: reduce, segment, and stage
