Why Some Ideas Travel and Others Die
Some insights don’t fail on merit.
They fail on communicability.
You can have the correct idea in your head and still watch it evaporate in the real world—because the idea never becomes legible enough for other people to carry it forward. When that happens, your understanding stays private. Useful, perhaps. But non-compounding.
The Hidden Mechanism: Ownership Without You
Most people treat communication like packaging.
But communicability is closer to ownership transfer. When your idea travels, it leaves a “handle” behind—something others can grab.
That handle usually has three properties:
- It has a clear shape. People can point to what it is.
- It has a clear use. People can point to what it does.
- It has a clear boundary. People know what it isn’t.
If any of those are missing, the listener can’t reliably “store” the idea. They’ll store vibes instead. And vibes don’t scale.
The Compounding Test (A Fast Diagnostic)
Ask yourself one question:
When you explain it, do people leave with a reusable model—or just more information?
Information is what fills time.
A reusable model is what creates leverage.
Here’s a practical way to test which you’re producing.
If they can retell it but can’t use it, the explanation likely lacks the boundary or the operation.
If they can use it but can’t retell it, the idea may be too implicit—too tied to your intuition and internal shorthand.
