Pacing isn’t vibes. It’s math.
Readers don’t experience “pace” as speed. They experience density: how many meaningful changes happen per unit time.
When density rises, the story feels fast.
When density falls, the story feels slow.
Either way, the reader’s brain is doing the same computation: What changed since the last time I cared?
The core equation: Change × Meaning ÷ Friction
If you want a pacing model you can actually draft with, use this:
Pacing perceived by reader ≈ (Meaningful Change) / (Reader Friction)
Where:
- Meaningful Change = decisions, reversals, revelations, costs, escalations—anything that shifts the story’s trajectory.
- Meaning = relevance to the character’s want, the plot’s stakes, or the thematic question you’re quietly driving toward.
- Friction = confusion, repetition, detours, unclear goals, or “explaining instead of showing.”
Two clocks running at once
Most pacing failures happen when writers focus on the wrong clock.
Clock A: Time on the page
Chapters and scenes have durations: a drive, a fight, a meeting, a conversation.
Clock B: Time in the reader’s head
This is the real clock. It advances whenever the story updates the reader’s mental model.
A scene can be “short” on the page and feel sluggish if it doesn’t advance Clock B.
A scene can be “long” on the page and feel sprint-fast if it keeps updating Clock B.
Meaningful change has measurable types
Not all changes equal. Some updates are cosmetic. Some reshape the trajectory.
