If you want a life (or career) that feels less like hunting and more like momentum, you need a body of work.
Not a portfolio that looks good once. A body of work that grows. Quietly. Relentlessly. The kind that makes opportunities find you because you’ve already been doing the thing.
The Real Goal: Compound Confidence
Most people try to “get noticed.” But notice is a lagging indicator.
Your actual leverage is this: each finished piece becomes proof that you can finish pieces. That proof changes how you work next—faster starts, cleaner decisions, better taste, fewer doubts.
And once you have it, your life stops being organized around emergencies and starts being organized around standards.
What Counts as a “Piece”?
A body of work is made of repeatable units. You don’t need to invent a new category each time.
Pick a unit type you can produce with the same basic pipeline:
- An essay series
- A weekly build (product, prototype, or automation)
- A case study
- A collection of templates
- A taught curriculum (even if small)
- A monthly field note
- A gallery of finished experiments
The Unit Test
Ask: If you had to do it again tomorrow, would it still feel like “you”?
If the answer is no, the unit is probably too bespoke. Bodies are built from standards, not from heroic improvisation.
The Body of Work Flywheel
Here’s the mechanism. You can feel it when it’s working, even if you can’t name it.
