You are released from prison and return to North Harbour for the first time in eight years. The town is physically familiar but socially altered. You see quickly that Mick Donnelly, Paul Barrett, and Terry Mullen have all done better than expected while you were inside. Nobody says anything openly hostile. That makes the restraint feel worse. You go back to the Kearney house, where Sheila Kearney and Kelly Kearney receive you with love mixed with strain. By the end of the episode, you understand the first real fact of your return: people were prepared for your release in practical terms, but not emotionally, and several men in town already seem too interested in how calm you are.
