When recovery driver Dean Harker accepts a lucrative late-night callout on the M6, he expects a routine breakdown and desperately needed money. Instead, he finds a bound, dying man hidden in the boot of an abandoned Audi—and two armed men posing as traffic officers who will do anything to recover the phone the victim forced into Dean’s hands.

As Dean races through Birmingham’s industrial back roads, he uncovers a sophisticated criminal operation involving cloned recovery trucks, signal jammers and stolen vehicles carrying secret cargo. But the evidence points dangerously close to home, implicating his estranged son Callum and forcing Dean into a desperate fight to survive long enough to learn the truth.

The dispatch came through at 1.13 in the morning, just as Dean Harker had decided he could no longer afford to stay awake. He was parked behind a shuttered carpet warehouse in Erdington, eating service-station crisps and watching rain collect on the windscreen. His recovery truck had been running since seven the previous morning. The cab smelled of wet nylon, diesel and the coffee he had spilled somewhere near Coventry.

The tablet mounted above the dash sounded twice.

PRIORITY RECOVERY. M6 J6. VEHICLE IMMOBILE. DRIVER CLEAR.

A silver Audi A6, registration ending KXO. Northbound exit slip, two hundred metres before the roundabout. Keys behind the offside front wheel. Police aware. Enhanced night rate: three hundred and eighty pounds, plus mileage.

Dean read the figure again. Three hundred and eighty would stop the fuel card being suspended in the morning. It would not touch the truck finance, the tax arrears or what he owed for the replacement hydraulic pump, but it would keep him working. At present, keeping working counted as a business plan.

He checked the dispatch code against the portal on his phone. The job had come through the usual broker, with the correct six-digit authentication and a live incident reference. He rang the automated validation number anyway.

Authenticated.

The sensible part of him still disliked it. Drivers did not often leave nearly twenty grand’s worth of Audi on an exit slip with the keys tucked behind a wheel. Then again, drivers did many things once rain, traffic and fear got involved.

He pressed accept.
