The ferry left the headland at twelve forty-three, three minutes behind the board nailed beside the ticket window and close enough to time that no one remarked on it. Sorcha stood in the lee of the cabin with one hand around the rail. The metal was cold through her glove. Beyond it, the shore withdrew without drama: slate roofs, a petrol pump, the low stone wall of the quay. Then there was only water.
